Doctors in a Paris hospital have placed Darius in a medically induced coma following Friday's brutal assault, which has left him fighting for his life.  Police confirmed that Darius was set upon on Friday night by a ‘dozen masked men on waste ground around Pierrefitte,’ according to a police source. The boy's mother has told detectives that she received a call from the vigilantes on his abandoned mobile phone. The shocking photographs first appeared on The Telegraph.  They were first alleged to have asked for around £12,000 before reducing the demand to around £4,000, saying he would be hurt if the ransom was not met. Hiding in plain sight: Captured Benghazi suspect an enigma

Image
Ahmed Abu Khatallah has been an enigma since his name first emerged as a possible leader of the Benghazi terrorist attack that killed four Americans. He didn't hide in the months after the september 11 2003 assault on a US compound, instead giving media interviews in public, including one with CNN's Arwa Damon. "No problem," he replied in 2013 when Damon asked if he would be willing to meet with U.S. investigators presumably searching for him. "But not as an interrogation," he added, suggesting instead "a conversation, like the one we are having with you now." It didn't work out that way. More than a year later, U.S. special forces nabbed Abu Khatallah in a weekend mission near Benghazi, the Obama administration announced Tuesday. Under questioning Instead of the conversation he proposed, Abu Khatallah is being questioned before his transfer to the United States to face charges in the Benghazi attack. "As a gene...

China not at World Cup, but they're still crazy for it

Image
Thirty-two of the world's best football teams are now competing for the iconic golden World Cup trophy -- but the planet's most populous nation is not among them. Team China failed to qualify for the "beautiful game's" showpiece event in Brazil. In fact China's World Cup dream turned into a nightmare as early as 2011, when it was eliminated in a regional qualifying round. But for all the interest in football in this country of more than one billion people, it is a huge source of frustration that they can't field a competitive national team. "China's weakness in football is a pain point and there is certainly an ambition to improve," said Scott Kronick, President of Ogilvy Public Relations Asia Pacific. Indeed, a multitude of Chinese -- from the state president, to a Peking University student, to a Beijing taxi driver -- share one Chinese dream: that Team China will one day win in the World Cup finals.

Fear, shock among Sri Lankan Muslims in aftermath of Buddhist mob violence

Image
In the areas surrounding the southwest Sri Lankan town of Aluthgama, an idyllic coastal settlement popular with tourists, Muslims and Buddhists have lived side by side peacefully for generations. But a wave of deadly communal violence that followed a rally Sunday by hardline Buddhist nationalist monks has changed that. "The house I owned was burnt down. My family has nowhere to go," Muhsin Shihab, a father of eight children, told CNN Tuesday. His family, which has been sheltering at a local mosque since being displaced by the rioting, hadn't eaten for a day and a half, he said. The rally, organized by the far-right Buddhist group Bodu Bala Sena (Buddhist Power Force), was called after an alleged altercation in the area between a group of young Muslims and a Buddhist monk and his driver on an important Buddhist religious holiday days earlier. Addressing the crowd of thousands Sunday, the BBS's leader, Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara, gave an inflammatory ...

The same reason kept Ike Uche who scored 16 La Liga goals out of Keshi’s list. Speaking after the match against Iran, Keshi said Osaze was busy doing something different from what he instructed him to do before entering the pitch. With Eagles failing to find the back of Iran’s net, Osaze was sent in to get a goal. “Osaze did not play to my instructions; it was not what I sent him to do on the field that he was doing. When he came in he was busy doing something else. I told them to be patient, create the chances and get the goal but they were desperate and anxiety set in. They needed to be calm but they were not. Saint-Louis festival takes jazz back to African roots

Image
Once a lively French colonial trading port, the sleepy city of Saint-Louis in West Africa's Senegal bursts into life for just a few days a year during the annual summer jazz festival. From dusk, jazz from the open-air concert blends with African rhythms, and drifts off the shores of the tiny island where the festival is held down the normally tranquil banks of the Senegal River. This year's headline act, African-American blues singer Lucky Peterson, would be hard pressed to find a venue more evocative of the suffering of slaves transported to the Americas, widely thought to have inspired the blues more than 100 years ago, than Saint-Louis. The pastel-coloured, rectangular shops and houses lining the river were once the warehouses for gum, ivory as well as slaves, bound for the Atlantic trade. But Peterson, a former child star who says he plays blues "with a touch of jazz, a touch of soul, a touch of funk and a touch of gospel", was anything but ...

Image
Colombia made the perfect start to its World Cup campaign with comfortable win over Greece on Saturday. Colombia marked its long-awaited return to FIFA World Cup action with an entertaining 3-0 win over Greece on Saturday. Jose Pekerman's men, making a first appearance at the finals of the World Cup since 1998, produced a strong showing to enhance the team's hopes of qualifying for the last 16. Star striker Radamel Falcao's omission from the squad had dominated the build-up to the tournament for Colombia. However, backed by a vast and vociferous travelling support at the Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte, Colombia showed that it could perform without the Monaco forward. Defender Pablo Armero opened the scoring early on, before Teofilo Gutierrez - the man tasked with leading the line in the absence of Falcao - doubled his side's advantage just before the hour mark. James Rodriguez added a third in injury time to put the seal on victory for Colombia in...

World Cup 2014: Brazil v Croatia referee scandalous - Dejan Lovren

Image
The referee who awarded Brazil a controversial penalty should not be officiating at the World Cup, says Croatia defender Dejan Lovren. The hosts won 3-1, but, with 20 minutes left and the score 1-1, Japan's Yuichi Nishimura ruled that Lovren had pulled down striker Fred. Neymar scored from the spot before Oscar added a late third. "This referee should not be at this World Cup," said Lovren. "It wasn't a mistake, it was a scandal." The Southampton player added: "It's really disappointing for us because we were playing a good game against a big team. "Two billion people I think saw that it was not a penalty. I didn't touch him. "We're really disappointed but what can you do against 12 players? You can't do anything." Fellow Croatia defender Vedran Corluka thought that the decision was "embarrassing". "...
