Aliko Dangote invests $1billion in rice production

Africa's richest man and c hairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote has invested $1billion in rice production in Nigeria. T he signing of the $1billion-dollar Rice Investment Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), between the Federal Government and Dangote Group held at the State House, Abuja yesterday August 1st The Minister of Agriculture, Adewunmi Adesina and Alhaji Dangote signed on behalf of the Federal Government and Dangote Group respectively. Commending Dangote Group, president Jonathan said the investment is the single largest investment ever made in rice production in Africa. He thanked Alhaji Dangote for investing in agriculture and assured him that his investment will be worthwhile. President Jonathan said he looked forward to a time Nigeria will be self-sufficient in rice production and a net-exporter of the grain, adding that the Federal Government will protect Nigeria’s borders and check smuggling. Governor Oshiomhole sacks two new Perm Secs over lateness

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole today July 24th reversed the appointments of two Permanent Secretaries for coming late to their swearing-in ceremony. According to Channels TV, the two appointees along with 18 other would-be Perm Secs were expected to have been seated at 12 noon for the swearing-in ceremony which was billed for 1pm but when the Governor arrived at 12.23pm, the two men were not there. Oshiomhole started the ceremony immediately and went ahead to swear in the 18 Perm Secs present. When the other two eventually showed up, Oshiomhole refused to swear them in, reversing their appointments. Appeals from the men and others around fell on deaf ears.

Deaths mount in Gaza and Israel as U.S. pushes cease-fire

 The death toll on both sides of the Gaza battle jumped Monday, as Palestinian officials reported scores more killed and Israel announced seven more soldiers died -- including several on Israeli soil. About 550 Palestinians have been killed, Gaza Health Ministry officials said. It's unknown how many were militants, but the United Nations has estimated that 70% are civilians. Israel has reported dozens of terrorists killed by its forces. In total, 25 Israeli soldiers have died, including three believed killed by friendly fire. Seven of the soldiers were killed Monday. Four were on Israeli soil, killed as a result of infiltration by Hamas operatives, the Israel Defense Forces said. Two of the soldiers were dual Israeli-American citizens: California native Max Steinberg and Sean Carmeli, from South Padre Island, Texas, the U.S. State Department said. While fielding questions from newsmen after today's National Security Council meeting held at the Presidential Villa, the Director General of the Department of State Security, DSS, Mr Ita Ekpeyong said that security forces know where precisely the kidnapped Chibok girls are but are being very careful in their rescue efforts so as not to endanger their lives. "The issue of the Chibok girls, government is making efforts. We know where they are but we don't want to endanger their lives, that is the truth. We want to take it gradually and release them at the appropriate time. A middle age man believed to be the son of Emir of Ringmer has been detained by the police in Kano over a bomb scare that triggers pandemonium at Sa"adatu Rimi College of Education located on the busy Kano - Zaria federal Highways. The Jigawa prince identified as Mahmood Sayyadi but popularly called Mazaje in social circle was said to have breached security when he was flagged down for checks. The Presidency may have finally cleared the coast for Mohammed Abacha, the son of late General Sani Abacha, to join forces with pro Jonathan supporters and win back Kano State for Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, next year. Competent sources told Vanguard that Wednesday's withdrawal of the N446.3 billion money laundering charge against Abacha was aimed at giving him a clean bill to be able to run as PDP gubernatorial candidate in the next election. A close associate of the family admitted, yesterday, that the Abachas were very excited about the withdrawal of the case against Mohammed by the Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke, and that he would likely proceed with his gubernatorial campaign programme.

President Jonathan appoints Bode George’s wife, Roli, as new NDLEA boss

President Jonathan has appointed Mrs. Roli Bode-George as the new Director-General of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The appointment was announced this evening by Presidential Spokesperson, Reuben Abati. Mrs Bode-George takes over from Mr Olufemi Ajayi, who is now the Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF). The appointment is with immediate effect. Bode George was arrested and jailed for fraud and abuse of office when he served as chairman of the Nigeria Ports Authority, but his conviction was later upturned by the Supreme Court.

The Rivers State Government has issued a statement saying the state Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has been arrested and detained by security operatives in Odudu, Ondo state. Governor Amaechi had arrived Ondo state en-route Ado-Ekiti where he was to join his fellow APC Governor, Kayode Fayemi for the last lap of his re-election campaign today in when he was refused entry into the state. He decided to turn back to Ondo state to go board the private jet that brought him but was however arrested by security agents. Adamawa Assembly begin impeachment proceedings against the state governor

The Adamawa State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against the state governor, Murtala Nyako, and his deputy, Bala Ngilari. The Assembly today Wednesday June 18th directed its clerk to serve the governor and his deputy an impeachment notice. Nyako has been having problems with the Assembly members since leaving the PDP to join the APC.

FG drops N100b stolen funds charges against Mohammed Abacha

The Federal Government today Wednesday June 18th withdrew the corruption charges filed against Mohammed Abacha, son of former military Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.   Mohammed who played a major role during his late father's administration is believed to have helped the late dictator launder a lot of stolen funds. The FG had accused Mohammed Abacha of receiving stolen property worth N100.38 billion, many of it kept in foreign countries.   The Federal government recently asked the US govt to return another $500 million recently frozen by the U.S. as part of funds stolen by the late dictator.

Update on the screening of 486 arrested travelers in Abia state: wanted terror kingpin nabbed A terror kingpin in the list of wanted terrorists of security forces in Nigeria have been detected in the ongoing screening of the 486 suspects napped while travelling in over 33 Hiace Hummer buses at night along Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway last Sunday.   So far other security agencies including the para-military have joined the screening exercise to ascertain the status of the remaining suspects.  Those identified as possible security risk or illegal immigrants are expected to be identified for further action. In a recent interview on the Hausa service of the British Broadcasting Corporation, former President Olusegun Obasanjo said some of the girls are pregnant while others may never return again.                  Also in the report, Obasanjo has blamed the Federal Government for not giving him the liberty to intervene in the abduction of the Chibok girls . "I have ways of reaching them, ( Boko Haram ) but I have not been given the go ahead. "I believe that some of them will never return. We will still be hearing about them many years from now, some will give birth to children of the Boko Haram members, but if they cannot take care of them in the forest, they may release them", Obasanjo said. He also stated that the girls might have been separated and kept in different locations

An event devoid of crisis heralded the grand entry of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi into the Emir palace in kano to ascend to the throne as Emir of Kano. A convoy of cars left the Kano State government house around 3:30PM accompanied by well-wishers, palace guard and Kano chief to break the wall for the Emir's entry into the palace. Sanusi , who was driven into the palace in the official vehicles of the emirate successfully entered into the palace through brand new gate, specifically erected for his entry as part of an age-old tradition.The palace guard then unleashed a series of gunshots  to mark his entry into the palace.The Emir has since returned to theGovernment House.

Former CBN Governor Sanusi Lamido emerges as the new Emir of Kano.

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has emerged as the new Emir of Kano after the throne became vacant on Friday following the monarch’s death. The Secretary to the Kano State Government, Rabiu Zakariya, announced the name of the new Emir on Sunday. Kwankwaso had said yesterday at the Government House in the state capital, that the announcement will made today (Sunday), after the kingmakers of the Kano Emirate Council paid him a condolence visit. “Insha Allah, by tomorrow (Sunday) those who are responsible to announce the new emir will do so,” the governor said yesterday. The former monarch, Alhaji Ado Bayero, died on Friday and was buried the same day in accordance with Islamic rites with the Kano Emirate flag flown at half-mast. Family Confirms Death Of ‘The Amazon,’ Dora Akunyili

The Akunyili family has officially confirmed the death today in India of Prof. (Mrs.) Dora Nkem Akunyili.  She was 59. A statement signed by former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, on behalf of the family, said she died at 10 a.m. Nigerian time in a Specialist Cancer Hospital following a two-year battle with the disease. “In spite her illness, Prof. Akunyili was unwavering in her belief in a better Nigeria,” Mr. Obi said.  “That was why she defied her condition and was part of Anambra State Handover Committee and the National Conference.” He recalled that the he visited her in India, she went beyond her own need for prayers, expressing concern for the abducted Chibok girls, security and other challenges facing the country.  She remained prayerful for the release of the girls and for God to help President Goodluck Jonathan to overcome all the challenges facing Nigeria. “She therefore urged all Nigerians to remain prayerful and committed t...
