Ukwa People Cry Out Over NDDC Neglect

Ukwa People Cry Out Over NDDC Neglect, Accuse Commission of Abandoning Oil-Producing Community.

The people of Ukwa in Abia State have decried what they describe as years of neglect and marginalization by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), despite being an oil-producing area contributing to the nation’s wealth.

Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, Dr. Michael Kasarachi Enyinna, the 2023 Vice Presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and an indigene of Ukwa West Local Government Area, expressed deep frustration over what he called the deliberate abandonment of the community by the NDDC.

Dr. Enyinna noted that despite the strategic importance of Ukwa to the Niger Delta and the Nigerian economy, the region has suffered consistent infrastructural decay and a glaring lack of federal presence. “The NDDC has failed in its responsibility to provide the basic infrastructure and social amenities that oil-producing communities like Ukwa deserve,” he stated.

In a scathing rebuke, he alleged that a representative of the NDDC from the area not only failed to develop the community but worsened its condition. “The same NDDC representative destroyed the road to my village and has refused to fix it. It’s pure hypocrisy—he is only playing politics and seeking favors while our people suffer,” Dr. Enyinna lamented.

He further accused local political figures of playing to the gallery and neglecting the real needs of the people. “It is unfortunate that Ukwa has been reduced to a land of sycophancy, where true leadership is absent, and the people have no dividends to show for their contributions to the nation’s oil wealth,” he said.

The Ukwa region, known for its oil reserves, has repeatedly complained about underdevelopment and lack of meaningful projects from both the NDDC and the federal government. Community members and activists are now calling for urgent intervention and a re-evaluation of the NDDC’s priorities to ensure that oil-producing communities like Ukwa receive their fair share of development.

Dr. Enyinna concluded by urging the federal government and relevant authorities to address the grievances of Ukwa people, warning that continued neglect could fuel discontent and unrest in the region.
